Slay the Spire 2: What to Expect from the Anticipated Sequel
Slay the Spire 2, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2019 hit video game, is set to be released next year via Steam Early Access.
The announcement was made by Mega Crit, the Seattle-based studio behind the game, during the recent Triple-i Initiative Showcase livestream event.
The Legacy of Slay the Spire
When the original Slay the Spire was released in 2017 for PCs, little did we know it would become one of the most influential computer games of the last decade.
Combining collectible deck-building card games with elements of a “roguelike” dungeon crawler, the game transports players into a dark fantasy world where they explore randomized dungeons and engage in battles through card gameplay.
Each battle in Slay the Spire challenges players to craft a winning strategy on the spot with the cards and relics they collect along the way.
The success in battles rewards players with more resources to aid them in their journey through the treacherous dungeon.
The Developers Behind the Success
Casey Yano, a former Amazon employee, and Anthony Giovannetti, previously working at Cequint and Ernie’s Games, are the masterminds behind Mega Crit.
Both graduated from the University of Washington-Bothell and took the leap of faith in 2015 to create Slay the Spire, which has since garnered immense success and a dedicated fanbase.
Following the footsteps of Slay the Spire, other CCG-based indie games like Deck of Ashes, Monster Train, and Griftlands have gained traction in the gaming community, solidifying this sub-genre’s popularity.
Mega Crit’s upcoming sequel, Slay the Spire 2, is expected to continue pushing boundaries and innovating within the genre.
Exciting Updates from the Gaming World
Aside from Slay the Spire 2, other exciting news from the Triple-i Initiative Showcase includes the free content update for Darkest Dungeon 2 by Red Hook Games, the debut of UnderMine 2 by Thorium Entertainment featuring 2-player co-op, and tinyBuild’s trailer release for Streets of Rogue 2 and RPG Broken Roads set in post-apocalyptic Australia.
The future of indie gaming looks promising with these innovative projects on the horizon.
